IYSMP 2015 Montreal Conference
Saturday October 17, 2015 · 9:00am – 5:00pm
The first IYSMP conference gathered over 100 high school and CEGEP students across Montreal for a day packed with interactive and hands-on STEM activities. The event began with an opening address by Dr. Chantal Lacasse from AbbVie, followed by a keynote address featuring Dr. Thomas Chang, Director of the Artificial Cells and Organs Research Centre at McGill University, Professor of Physiology, and Inventor of the Artificial Cell.
Students had an interactive session through a microbiology lab tour with Dr. Samantha Gruenheid, experienced an atmospheric sciences workshop by PhD students Mr. Avik Ghoshdastidar and Mr. Uday Kurien, and got hands on in a suturing workshop lead by Mr. Alex Lachapelle from the McGill Medical Students’ Surgery Society. Ms. Anjali Pradhan from BioTech Annecto Montreal organized and lead a networking workshop, giving students valuable skills regardless of field. Through our IdeasIncubator, students had the opportunity to explore and present their own ideas applying nanoparticles, genetically engineered bacteria, and piezoelectricity.
The event concluded with the discussion panel featured four renowned scientists: Dr. Michèle Brochu (Université de Montréal), Dr. Éric Déziel (INRS), Mr. Haïg Djambazian (Génome Québec), and Dr. Joelle Pineau (McGill University).
The IYSMP team would like to thank our sponsors AbbVie Pharmaceuticals, Kavitha Shiva of Voyages SkyExpress, and real-estate broker Perry Balendra for their generous support in making our event possible! We would also like the extend our gratitude to all of the individuals who volunteered their time and of course, our attendees without whom this event would not have been a success!
